Photography gears ~ new addition

For the past few months I have actually added a few more stuff to my photography gears but haven’t had the time to take photos of them and post them up. Those that have check my about page would know what I have added to my gears, to those that don’t hit the jump to see my new gears.

I have mention before that I plan to buy the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 prime lens, but anyone one who own the lens will knows that it’s built is not really good, so I opt for the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM instead. Got is used at approximately USD356 including the hood and an UV filter. The lens is in very good condition, just like a new one and performance is good, use it for my recent figure shoot of Alicia Florence.

Some test shots using the 50mm f/1.4, at f/1.4 and f/1.8 it’s actually quite soft, with sort of a dreamy look with it’s creamy bokeh.

At f/2.2 and above it’s really sharp while retaining the creamy bokeh. I just love the bokeh produce by this lens.

Got the Canon Speedlite 580EX II around end of February and it’s a good thing I did, otherwise the photos I took at GACC 2008 would have been awful. Still learning the ins and outs of flash photography, it’s really not as easy as mount the flash and shoot as that would be the same as using the built in flash. It’s a whole new ball game when you shoot with external flash.

I have mention in one of my previous post that I traded my Canon EF-S 17-85 IS USM lens for the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 lens with a fellow photographer, well here’s the Tamron. A sharp f/2.8 lens for a price that won’t break you bank account. Have taken quite a lot of photos using this lens since I got it, so you can see how well it perform in some of my previous post or in my gallery.

For the time being I won’t be adding any new gears, the current ones that I own are quite enough for me at the moment, though you’ll probably notice I don’t have a telephoto lens. I don’t really need to use telephoto lens a lot, so it’s not something that I need to get in the near future.

Shots taken using Canon EOS 400D/Rebel XTi with Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 lens and Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 lens.

  1. Oh my! you sure are rich! :P What’s next? XD

  2. next will be nothing ^^, this gears are quite enough for me to last for quite sometime

  3. The comparison of the 1.4 and 1.8 needs to be taken in a real life scenario. For example a model in front and the background to define how much difference is the bokeh. From the miniature (I’m presuming shot from top to down), it doesn’t tell enough about the bokeh. I own a 50mm 1.8 and it’s my fast lens when I try not to use flash.

As for the Tamron, I gotta pinjam from you when I meet you to test. LOL! :P

For the flash, learn how to bounce. Then the next challenge, if you can’t bounce – what do you do. I’m still finding out. LOL!

  4. @Danny~Only manage to use this lens for a shoot last Sat so will post them up, but mostly shot at f/2.0 though coz I know the lens is soft if wider than that. The figure was shot at the figures eye level :)
Hahah the Tamron is really a good lens, sharp at f/2.8, only focusing a bit slow sometimes.
Been bouncing flash a lot lately, now need to practice on using it as fill :)

  5. Hey I’m thinking that exact same lens 50mm F/1.4, only the Sony one of course ^_^, they say its excellent for portraits. Also I want to get a 28mm F/2.8 Wide Angle lens for landscapes.

I’ll try to get both once I reach New York this summer because the difference between $ and € is huge so I think I’ll get them for a really good price ^_^

  6. Damn forgot to write buying after the thinking :P

  7. 50mm is a nice portrait lens, it gives a nice bokeh ^^. I was actually debating on either the 50mm or the 85mm in the end got the 50 instead since it’s easy for me to use it indoor during event.
Lens are much cheaper in New York, wish I could go there and buy some ^^

  8. hmm… for those who may not know 50mm if mount on a 1.6x FOVCF body is around 80mm…

    just my 2 cents…

  9. cam-pod: ya, that’s why he doesn’t need the canon 85mm f1.8

in addition, there is the canon 28mm f1.8 or the sigma 30mm f1.4 which is ~50mm :)

  10. @cam-pod~yup that’s correct
    @vincent~yeah, and with my 100 f/2.8 i probably won’t need to buy either 85mm or the 135mm.
