A recent model shoot at Taman Tasek Permainsuri, the girl is my friend’s colleague and this is her first time doing a model shoot. She was quite nervous at first, but after a while she began to loosen up a bit, talking and joking with her helps I guess.
Anyway this shoot was a good chance for me to try out my EF 50mm f/1.4 so the whole shoot was done entirely using that lens.

This is the first batch of photos, will post the second batch later.
As you can see I use f/2 for the entire shoot and while reviewing the photos, though f/2 is sharp but the DOF is still too small and not suitable for angle shoot. If shooting parallel to the model then it’s ok, but if at an angle you will get only one of the eye sharp. Something that I should remember when shooting next time.
Overall I am really satisfy with this lens it’s sharp from f/2 onwards, have nice bokeh, focusing is fast with USM and the color is just the way I like it. The lens is also quite compact, well a bit bigger with the hood attached but it’s still very light. Built quality is good and feel solid, though I have heard that the front element is quite fragile, so I have the hood on all the time to protect the front element. A very good walkaround lens when you want to work more on composition instead of zooming in and out.
Shots taken using Canon EOS 400D/Rebel XTi with Canon EF 50mm f/1.4
Out of all, I liked 1, 10 and 12.
12 would’ve been perfect for me if she moved nearer to the center avoiding the rail and the bush. Might also have asked to step her left foot on the ground.
And if there’s one thing I learned when using my 50mm f1.8 is that for portraits, I’d use F3.5-4 so the overall model is clear and the background is still bokeh.
Otherwise, shoot in f2-2.8 and stand further back. This lens isn’t good for 3-4 feet away. Like 2 of my shots here I learned the hard way.

12 is my favourite, it’s a case of overexposure went right haha. Yeah, those are little things that we easily miss while shooting and won’t realize it until end of the day, need to be more observant
for mine f/2.0-2.8 is good for full and half-body, anything closer i’ll use f/3 onwards
Can see here for some latest shots using the 50mm f/1.4, much better result
